This image reveals the diversity and spatial organization of different cell types in an adult mouse lung. The epithelial cells line the outermost layer of the tissue and are constantly exposed to allergens and insults. The endothelial cells line the blood vessels that allow gas exchange during respiration.
I took this image to examine the spatial organization of non-immune cells, which comprise epithelial cells, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells.
What we see here reveals the stereotypical topological domain of cell types within the adult lung. Different tissue domains collectively regulate the immune response against infection
