"My work focuses on the role of cell-material interactions in cellular phenotype modification for cell-therapy applications. We were trying to learn if cells are able to sense different patterns (mainly flat or contoured) of the surface on which they are cultured on and how this affects their biological outcome.
This image represents endothelial cells cultured on flat surface after inhibition of the Src pathway. Nuclei are in blue, the actin cytoskeleton is in red and vinculin focal adhesions are in green. This image allowed us to verify that endothelial cells cultured on a 2D surface with induced inhibition of the Src pathway attain the same localization of vinculin as those cultured in 3D. This confirmed our hypothesis that material features can modify cellular phenotype by interfering with critical pathways."
