Memory is a central function of the brain and is essential to everyday life. Based on pioneering studies of human subjects as well as animal models, it has been firmly established that the hippocampus is a conserved brain region essential for the formation and retrieval of memories. To do so, we have to develop novel research tools. One such tool, which allows us to study the function of the major sub-region of the hippocampus (CA1, shown in red), is represented in this image. This image shows a hippocampus from mouse tissue, where one can appreciate various sub-regions based on the differences in blue staining density.
