Most people think of the clitoris as a small, button-like knob of nerve endings that sits above the vulva externally. However, that is just the tip of the (clitoral) iceberg. In reality, it is a large, primarily internal pelvic organ that contains a complex network of nerves, vessels, and erectile tissue that are not only important for sexual function, but reproduction as well.

Historically, the clitoris and female sexual health have been understudied and underrepresented in medical research, contributing to the limited knowledge of clitoral anatomy and inadequate treatment options for sexual dysfunction for women and people with a clitoris.

This image represents a snapshot of the great anatomical diversity of the clitoris observed in a subset of our study population. The full, 3D structure of the clitoris is not widely known by the general public, through quantifying and visualizing how the clitoris differs we can better appreciate not only the diversity of this important anatomy, but also gain insight on how these differences may potentially influence the physiology and treatment of sexual dysfunction of women and people with a clitoris.
