These images display the mycelium and spores from the filamentous fungus Fusarium venenatum engineered to express a fluorescent protein.

Filamentous fungi have many interesting properties, and their uses range from biomaterials to food production and agriculture. Through synthetic biology we could engineer these organisms to acquire advanced function, yet fungal genetic tools and their manipulation remain limited. Fluorescent proteins are a useful tool to directly detect the expression of heterologous proteins, which can be visualized through confocal microscopy.
