We grew human breast tissue into mini-organs in our 3D growth system and fluorescently marked them. By following differentiation markers, we could characterize healthy human mammary development.
Many physiologically relevant aspects of mammary development are lost in current models which take place in either 2D culture settings or mice, whose mammary glands differ from those of humans. Creating an 3D system which additionally contains many components relevant to the human breast is critical to properly recapitulating its development.
