Longitudinal skeletal muscle fibers from the quadriceps of mice are outlined by Laminin staining of sarcolemmal muscle membranes in red, myosin staining in green, and DAPI staining in blue. Viewers should notice the beautifully organized patterning of skeletal muscle, with each long muscle fiber being adjacent to one another. The long contractile nature of muscle fibers allow for bodily movement through the generation of strong forces along the length of the fiber. In addition, each muscle fiber contains hundreds of nuclei. Viewers might notice a pink color in the image, and that is where blue nuclei overlap with the muscle membrane staining in red, producing a pink color. This pretty color and effect shows the wonder of physics and the colorfulness of life. This image is part of a project to help in understanding the mechanisms of muscle wasting/cancer cachexia induced by pancreatic cancer.
