Intestinal crypts and villi from the duodenum of mice with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. This type of cancer enhances intestinal iron absorption in the duodenum, therefore the iron transporter (DMT1) that is stained in red, is increased. The high iron content within intestinal epithelial cells is shown by ferritin staining in green. Nuclei are stained with DAPI in blue. Viewers should note that DMT1 is expressed on the side of the intestine and intestinal epithelial cells facing the lumen, hence the red and yellow staining is only seen on the outside of the intestinal villi.
