When a biomaterial or device is implanted into tissue in vivo, it induces an inflammatory response known as the foreign-body reaction. This typically leads to the formation of a fibrous capsule that surrounds the implant, separating it from the target tissue. This fibrotic tissue is a longstanding problem that routinely causes failure of the device. Zhao Lab researchers are developing soft adhesive materials, which works as non-fibrotic interface. Miitigating fibrous capsule formation in diverse organs in different animal models using invisible materials that do not cause observable foreign body reactions.
