Neurons form dynamic, interconnected networks to transmit information and rely on one another throughout development. Their vital support system, glial cells, are visible in the background of this image and they protect neurons from injury and guide the growth of our nerves.

In this image I wanted to see if a uniform neural network could be created from individual neuronal cells instead of the standard, more-mature spheroids. Here we see cells were seeded onto a hydrogel before they were able to aggregate into spheroids, but clearly the early disruption did not stop the development of a dense, widespread network.

The overall goal of my research is to create robust in vitro models of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) to ultimately investigate interventions to help restore tissue function after traumatic injuries or disease. These images allow for a deeper understanding of neuronal behavior which will enable me to apply this knowledge to eventually create a representative NMJ model.
