This image depicts an injured liver that is in the process of initiating regeneration by producing proteins that tells the cells to grow. With the goal of better understanding how an organism senses organ injury to induce regeneration, the researcher used RNA FISH to identify the cell type responsible for growth factor synthesis following liver injury. The image reveals that hepatic stellate cells are responsible for growth factor synthesis, indicating that the liver senses its own injury to induce regeneration.
