Diabetes is a common disease in which the glucose regulating cells in the pancreas, that form spheroids called islets, fail at their function. There is currently no reliable and predictive in vitro model of the pancreas to allow researchers to develop a cure for diabetes. We are working on developing a physiologically relevant in vitro model for the endocrine pancreas using islets that look like this. This image shows a single islet. The 4 corners are replicates that have been blown up into small squares for visualization purposes only.
