"Our images show 3d renderings of neurons and parts of neurons which were reconstructed from electron-microscopic images of a very large stack of slices of mouse somatosensory cortex. This particular image shows a number of spiny dendrites in color and axons synapsing on them as semi-transparent objects. The dendrites run in a bundle, a so-called ‘cortical minicolumn’, up to the surface of the brain (horizontal in this image). They receive inputs from numerous axons at synapses, many of them on spines. The colors are all arbitrary since the EM images do not show color."
