"This image shows neurons in a volume of visual cortex of a living mouse labeled with a genetically encoded fluorescent protein. Different colors correspond to portions of axon branches in different depths of a 3D volume.  We took this image to monitor the structure of neurons in a living mouse brain.  This technique allows us to illuminate a handful of neurons with exquisite detail to understand whether or how experience can modify the structure of circuits in the brain that may be important for learning and memory and implicated in disease."
