This image shows an array of polymer microparticles embedded with gold nanorods on a glass microscope slide. Each particle is connected to its neighbors by a thin polymer “scum” layer.

The black appearance comes from the gold nanorods, which act as plasmonic resonators designed to trigger initial drug release upon light-induced heating.

These particles are being developed for a dual-release cancer treatment strategy, combining rapid drug release through photothermal activation with sustained release from polymer degradation, offering precise, localized therapy with potential clinical applications.

An array of polymer microparticles impregnated with gold nanorods is pictured on a standard glass microscope slide.
