The phrase 'You are what you eat' highlights the influence environment has on our body and this is particularly pertinent in Parkinson's disease (PD). PD was discovered in 1817 and for the longest of time, it was thought to be a disease of the brain. Pictured here is the myenteric plexus of a human Parkinson's Disease (PD) patient colon tissue; it along with my research supports the more recent hypothesis that the gut plays a crucial role in PD pathogenesis and perhaps is a starting point of the disease. With human studies developing alongside animal studies, my hope is to uncover the role of gut-brain axis in PD.
