This image shows a single COS cell that has been physically expanded about 8,000-fold in volume using expansion microscopy. In the long term, this platform will allow the mapping of molecular drivers of disease in their native context. Disease-specific conformations, aggregates, and interactions can be compared directly to those in healthy cells. These maps will bridge structural and systems biology, connecting molecular chemistry to cellular physiology and therapeutic mechanism, and ultimately establishing a way to read the chemical organization of living systems as clearly as we now read their genomes.
