Plants might look motionless to the naked eye, but at the molecular scale they hum with activity. Like tiny machines, plant components work together to build exquisitely complex structures, repair injuries, and respond to environmental changes – with all of these processes renewably powered by the sun. Here, researchers work to identify the functional parts of a small flowering plant called Arabidopsis thaliana, in the hope of applying these biological tools to solve future engineering challenges.
